Practical Work-form a mass

Crowds of people were cheering for players. The people had complicated behaviors which formed an unified composition, and with only one goal.

Chris Jordan–mass phenomena

Chris Jordan who is known for his works depicting mass consumption, waste and particularly garbage. His works contain a bold message about unconscious behaviors in our everyday lives. These complicated and mass garbage that were all discarded by their owners constructed a whole, simple picture. They were treated the same as each other.

I am trying to use the same method to present human’s complicated behaviors which all have one reason or result. It’s a kind of relationship between simplicity and complexity.

I did a practical work after moving house last week. I went to a competition, and recorded these people cheered for players. The cheers were noisy but from everyone’s simple intention. And the whole shape is simple.
Inspired by Gursky’s photographs, I edited several scenes together. I am going to edit another one.

Tutorial

5 03 2010

I did a tutorial that I missed two weeks ago with Andy yesterday. It helps me to stop thinking without direction. About my project, I really need to throw all these messy ideas, and think about the beginning of my aim. Andy showed some artists’ work which are really useful.

Andreas Gursky : The photo has a simple shape, outline, but a very busy complicated modern life or grid visually. It’s an obvious contrast between simplicity and complexity.
Andy gave an example that how to shoot it as a film to express the relationship.

Gursky's May Day V (2006), at Matthew Marks.

Power of Ten

Power of Ten : the film is made by Charles and Ray Eames in 1977. The film is all about scale, moving 10 times further every 10 seconds.

The relationship should be the main point, like a journey from simplicity to complexity. The big problem is how or in what way, like Andy suggested time, shot.
I must start filming ASAP, do some experiments.  At the same time, I have to move house next week, will be really busy.

Make it Simple or Complicated?

3 03 2010

I took the photo in China. The kid was in the sea, and takes the main position of the frame alone. The sea looks pale and lack of details, and surrounds the kid. It’s interesting that the wavy complicated sea is very simple because of exposure, and the kid looks complicated.

==================

The main aim of technology is making life simple. However, it’s not going to the direction we hope.

Before telephone was invented, people always communicated with others face to face that was the most direct way. But now we can send text through internet or mobile phone, to communicate. It’s much more convenient, at the same time, it makes communication complicated and more misunderstanding.

After thinking about the problem, I got an idea about doing a work that present high-tech or complicated thing in a simple way. For an example, I can design a complicated programming work or shoot a complicated high-tech scene and then show it in flip-book.
Another work I want to do is making the most simple communication complicated. I can design a complicated stupid interactive process to achieve the communication. It is used to satirize the situation I mentioned above.
