UNIT 2 Assessment

Realise the Project Proposal and prepare towards final exhibition.

After many visual experiments in Unit1, now I found that I got closer to the outcome of my project proposal. Especially my original inspiration is Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photos such as “Theater”.

I had some self-developments and deep thinking after the tutorial and Symposium2. My works has been improved to a similar state that contained a deeper meaning under the surface of them, instead of some shallow moving images I tested in Unit 1.

I also considered about audience’s point of view such as how to improve my work and let them understand better.

I’ve learnt to make simple interactive works through Processing, and combined the skill with my project. I’m so glad to see the progress, and hope it would continue.

Present a resolved body of creative practice that has evidenced the systematic enhancement of your knowledge and understanding.

In Unit 2, I focused on the direction that inspired by Andreas Gursky and Chris Jordan’s photos, and took some photos to present the relationship between simplicity and complexity of buildings in the modern life.

Through tutor and peers’ advices and my self-reflection, I made my work contain something more than its surface. Also because of my new simple processing work, the works have become what I want to express and experiment in my research paper. “Less is more” exactly presented the less I showed in the Processing work, the more space I hope audience can reflect.

Analyse and reflect coherently upon your own practice and others through your presentation at the programmed symposium forming a synthesis of your practice-based research.

At the Symposium 2, I presented some artists who inspired me after Mid-Point Review, the basic direction of my project and the first Processing works. I reflected something needed improving and received tutor’s suggestions at the tutorial after Symposium 2. I looked at Rachel Whiteread’s sculptures, and got interesting reference from Paul Coldwell who is recommended by tutor because of commons between my works and his research. Although the ideas were different, I found the common between them was their works were readily comprehensible. Then I considered about how to make my project readily comprehensible as well.

Summaries your overall progress and formulate a constructive plan for continuing Personal and Professional Development.

One of my future plans I talked in a tutorial was about earthquake-stricken areas in China. There are numberless collapsed houses, which are made of a chaos world. Thousands of people lost their families, homes. Meanwhile, there is only one simple wish among them—to rebuild their homeland. When they face the messy place, how simple their dream is. I hope that I can go there to look for something can be captured as my aim about simplicity and complexity.

In the interactive or digital media field, there is much more room to continue. I need to learn more and experiment more about Processing. The transformation by it is close to my theme sometimes. Like input a great number of data, and get simple visualized output. Anyway, technique is still a tool which can help presenting my thoughts well. In my opinion, developing and digging into a subject is much more important than technique in my future development.
